New information has emerged about a deadly accident involving a Charlotte Area Transit bus.

Officials are investigating the crash. A preliminary investigation shows a truck that drove that through a red light and collided with the CATS bus may have been experiencing brake failure, police say. Over a dozen people were injured in the collision and one person was killed. Both drivers will be on paid leave until the CMPD investigations are completed.

A 1987 Ford F-150 was traveling on the off ramp from John Belk Freeway and approached the intersection of East Third Street, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said. Investigators said he turned into the path of the bus.

Bus drivers are tested for drugs and alcohol after every crash, said CATS spokeswoman Krystel Green, but the results from the drivers involved in the two deadly crashes were not available Monday.

The passenger of the truck, 59-year-old Gloria McMenamy-Moreno, and the CATS bus driver, 58-year-old Priscilla Chisolm, suffered minor injuries.

Thirteen of the 19 passengers on the bus also received treatment for minor injuries at CMS, while driver of the bus was taken to Presbyterian Hospital with minor injures.

“The Ford F150 may have experienced a braking system failure prior to the collision”, police said Monday.
