Johnny Depp has a total of three Oscar nominations, but the last time the Academy singled out the actor was was in 2008 for “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street“.

Back in April we saw an unsettling preview of the upcoming movie Black Mass with Pirates of the Caribbean and Edward Scissorhands star Jonny Depp playing infamous Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger.

According to the trailer, Bulger’s decades-long rise to power was precipitated by a dirty Federal Bureau of Investigation official, played by Joel Edgerton, who allowed Bulger to act with impunity for years in exchange for favors. However, the alliance gets quickly out of hand. It seemed to be working out well - particularly with corrupt FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) helping to smooth things - but when the Bureau began making arrests, agents double-crossed Bulger and prosecuted him.

Black Mass hits theaters on September 18 but, as Gossip Cop previously reported, will debut at the beginning of September for an out-of-competition screening at the Venice Film Festival. The “Black Mass” trailer promises a lot of violence as clips show Bulger shooting a shotgun at a moving vehicle, kicking a man on the ground, and much more. There are a few close-up shots in this particular trailer where you can really see the make-up caked on his face.
