Family of woman praise murdered garda’s bravery

Visitors will be able to pay their respects to the ten people - including five children - who lost their lives at the Carrickmines halting site on Saturday and Garda Golden who tragically lost his life while on duty in Omeath on Sunday.

By Siobhan’s bedside at Beaumont Hospital, Sean Phillips is not sure if the incident may have happened had his daughter made her statement on Saturday, the paper reports.

“Garda Golden, in the service and protection of others, laid down his life for my daughter Siobhan, myself and my family”.

“For now, we pray for Siobhan’s recovery and for the family of Garda Golden as they face their immeasureable grief”.

Siobhan’s parents have expressed their condolences to the family and colleagues of Garda Golden, who will be laid to rest on Thursday.

Garda Golden was shot dead on Sunday evening after he brought Ms Phillips (22) to her home in the Mullach Álainn estate near Omeath.

“We ask for privacy for our family and Siobhan’s small children at this time”, they added.

It is understood Mackin had subjected Siobhan Phillips to a violent assault on Friday, after which she left the house.

He is to have a state funeral with arrangements announced today.

Nothing could hide her fear and on Saturday afternoon she called her stepmother Norma Phillips with the simple words “Norma, I’m terrified”.

Garda Golden advised her father to stay outside, and followed Siobhan into the house.

He said: “Siobhan may not pull through, we just don’t know”.

They were officially opened by chairman of Ardee Municipal District Committee Colm Markey and Ardee Garda Station Superintendent Andrew Watters. According to Sean, Garda Golden informed Crevan Mackin that they were simply there to retrieve a few of her belongings.

Meanwhile, a woman who was wounded in the incident remains in a critical condition in hospital and the 24 year old gunman, Adrian Crevan Mackin, died at the scene.

“He saved my life”.
