Golden State Warriors Coach Steve Kerr attended the team’s practice Sunday and took a few moments to talk about the health issue that has caused him to take an indefinite leave of absence.

Eleven days after the Warriors announced that Kerr temporarily would step aside to focus on rehabilitation, he gave his first interview on Sunday and detailed why he doesn’t know when he will return.

Kerr, speaking at the team’s practice facility in northern California, said that he suffered the leak of spinal fluid during back surgery on July 28, and despite a second procedure to address the problem was still experiencing symptoms.

“It’s very rare, it does happen occasionally, but it happens when there’s an accidental nick of the dura that surrounds the spinal cord”, he told ESPN.

He had a second surgery September 4 to fix the leak.

Kerr said he is feeling better. “I wanted to be clear to you guys and the fans. Because I think there’s kind of a grey area, people wondering what’s going on”, he said. He said there is no timetable for his return to the team. He told reporters that his body is “recalibrating” and that, while he is bored, he’s still dealing with headaches.

“Unfortunately, it’s not like a sprained ankle, one to two weeks”, Kerr said. That’s where I am. “I’m going to heal”.

Kerr said he has not questioned his long-term future as a coach going through the grind of an National Basketball Association schedule. However, if Kerr ends up missing a significant amount of time, it will be interesting to see what effect that has on the Warriors.
