The social media post, which appears to have been removed from the Charleston newspaper’s Facebook page, was widely reported in news media venues. Local news outlet, KETK, in Texas obtained a screengrab of Cook’s horrendous post.
The post would lead to one commentator, Elliot Brown encouraging those that were offended to call Mabank fire department and report the firefighter. By Friday morning, the department - located about an hour southeast of Dallas - wrote on Facebook that it had launched an investigation.
A firefighter lost his volunteer position at Mabank, Texas fire department for sympathizing with Dylann Roof, the alleged kill behind the Charleston massacre.
On its Facebook page, Mabank fire command initially posted this: “The Mabank Fire Department Command Staff is in the process of investigating the allegations being made of Firefighter Kurtis Cook“.
“The Mabank Fire Department doesn’t condone nor promote these type of actions or thoughts”, the post read. “On behalf of all members, the Mabank Fire Department offers our deepest apologies to all that were offended by his actions and comments”.
KYTX, the CBS station, said Cook didn’t deny making the post when confronted by fire department brass.
The department received several positive remarks throughout the day Friday for their swift action removing the firefighter.
